Our Voices, Our Votes: Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Women Winning the Right to Vote

Grand Forks, ND – ERA NOW is pleased to partner with several local and national organizations to announce a day of events celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage and share stories about some of the pioneers leading the cause in North Dakota.

Schedule of Events:

11:30am-9:30pm - Standing Together: Women’s Ongoing Fight for Equality Exhibition
This exhibit, sponsored by the National Woman’s Party, provides an exploration of the impact of the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It explores the suffrage and women’s rights movements with compelling images and tells the story of the difficult fight to secure the right to vote by women in North Dakota.


12:00-1:00pm - Voices in Leadership Panel Discussion & Lunch
Panelists will discuss the role of women in shaping public policy and share insights. Panelists include former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp; Susan Carter, President of the National Woman’s Party; N.D. Senator Judy Lee; Marilyn Youngbird, Consultant with Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation; and N.D. Senator JoNell Bakke. Welcome and introductions will be by Gracie Lian, UND Student Body President. Moderating the panel will be Susan Wefald, former North Dakota Public Service Commissioner and published author.

4:30-6:30pm - Her Votes Count UND Art Collections Opening Reception
This is a juried art exhibition celebrating the spirit of the women before us, whose creative and enduring acts of courage over several decades ensured the votes of all women would be counted. Hosted by UND Art Collections, the exhibit features regional artists and will run through November 21. Nelda Schrupp is the guest juror. Purchase Award(s) will be announced at 5:15pm | Complimentary refreshments will be served

6:30-9:00pm - Film: Iron Jawed Angels
An evening featuring a reading of Why Vote by Eliot Glassheim, former N.D. Representative and published author; a performance of Suffragette by Dance Etc.; and a screening of Iron Jawed Angels. This film, released in 2004, is directed by Katja von Garnier and stars Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, Frances O’Connor, and Julia Ormond. Iron Jawed Angels is a historical drama about the defiant young activists who take the U.S. women's suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help women win the right to vote.
